Volunteer Milestones

We're so grateful to have the best volunteers around at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach and North Peninsula State Park! They make the park a better place, and we are appreciative for their help. We recently recognized several volunteers who have reached milestones in hours served. They are a great example of the amazing spirit that our volunteers bring to the parks.

Left to right: Ruben Gam; Ryan Jones with Park Services Specialist Stephanie York

Ruben Gam began volunteering several years ago after retiring as a Park Ranger at Gamble Rogers.  Together with his wife Jann, you can find Ruben picking up litter along the park's road shoulders every week. Recently, he filled four buckets with trash and one bucket with cans!   Each month Ruben also checks and lubricates all the locks in the parks. Congratulations Ruben on achieving 500 hours served!

We were happy to have Ryan Jones back in the park serving dual roles as a campground host as well as accomplishing some maintenance projects. Ryan is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet and always arrives to work with a smile on his face. Ryan can often be found assisting other volunteers with tasks in addition to completing his own assignments.

Kudos on achieving 1000 hours, Ryan!

Left to right: Samantha Stone; Tom Maize

Congratulations to Samantha "Sam" Stone on achieving 1000 hours of volunteer service! Sam is a steady, dependable volunteer on Sea Turtle Patrol. She volunteers nearly every Sunday during nesting season and helps keep the beach clean and safe by picking up litter. Sam brings a positive and can-do attitude every time she is at the park.

Tom Maize is a consistently reliable, visible and active member of the volunteer team.  Extremely detailed and diligent, Tom spends hours every year plodding through acres of Gamble Rogers and North Peninsula searching, treating and removing invasive, exotic plants. He assists his wife Lynn with providing fun and informative programs to park visitors.  Tom's career in surveying has proved invaluable to management staff with multiple projects in the parks. Much applause for Tom in reaching 5000 hours served.

L to R: Gary Lowe and PSS Stephanie York; Jim Van Ness and Park Manager Lynne Flannery

Volunteering for the first time at Gamble Rogers as a resident maintenance host, Gary Lowe fit right in and quickly became a go-to person.  From mowing to replacing damaged timbers to opening the park, Gary demonstrated a high degree of professionalism and ability to work well with others. Congratulations Gary on serving 6000 hours with Florida State Parks!

Receiving the award for Exceptional Service and Dedication, Jim Van Ness and Donna Dempsey are the epitome of what that means. These two have gone above and beyond the call of duty on numerous occasions. Jim and Donna sincerely care about their role as campground hosts, always polite and friendly to the campers and the first to jump in when extra help is needed.  Thank you Jim and Donna!
